Make Something For The Troops Challenge

Hope you are doing well. The Fall weather has been perfect here in Georgia; chilly in the morning, with a good rest-of-the-day warmup.

A while back I was visiting the Woodcraft website and noticed their Turn For Troops Event being held November 10-11th. This event marks the coming of Veteran’s Day on November 11th. If you are a wood turner, I would encourage you to join with a Woodcraft store near you and turn a pen for a serviceman (or servicewoman).

Check out the pen that I recently made — see the photo above. It’s an American Patriot Bolt-Action style pen. It has a click-pen action and some nice American emblems on it. I used Zebra wood for the pen barrel. The plating is antique brass. If you’re interested in how to make one, check out my step-by-step tutorial.

I plan to give this pen to a friend who served in the Vietnam War.

Not a pen turner? No problem. But I would still encourage you to get out to the shop in the next couple of weeks and make something for a veteran or someone currently serving. Maybe you could give it to someone you know — a friend, coworker, family member. Or maybe an absolute stranger you pass on the street.

And if you can’t make something, perhaps you could make a donation. Below are a few charitable websites that supports troops and their families:

Military Benefits
Operation Homefront
Operation Gratitude
Support Our Troops

If you are in the military or have served in the past, I just want to say thank you for serving our country. God bless you and your family!

Feel free to comment or reach out and let me know what you’re working on.

Happy woodworking!

Stephen
